Packing for an island holiday and a city weekend escape – in one bag. It can be done!
We recently got back from our (belated) honeymoon, three countries in 8 days! that included NZ, but still – three countries!!! It’s apparently not that easy to pack for a tropical island getaway and a city escape in the same suitcase.
Kat was fine. Shorts, a t shirt and jandals or sneakers work in both locations and as I expected in Rarotonga he fit right in wearing a lava lava (sarong) (since that’s all he wears back home in Samoa).
But for some unknown reason it’s just not that simple for me! I ended up taking:
3 dresses – I tossed up the idea of taking a maxi dress, but I’m hoping to work on tanning my legs and that’s less likely to happen if they’re covered up. I have 3 identical dresses, in different patterns from kmart. They have cap sleeves and pockets and can be dressed up or down.
2 shorts – white and denim 1 pants – black skinnies, made from cotton, not denim so they’re lightweight. I intend on wearing these on the plane in and out of NZ and a pair of skinny jeans just in case the weather was terrible, but that’s subject to the availability of room in our joint suitcase!
2 camisoles – I don’t really like to show my arms, but if I’m to get a tan (and survive the warm weather) sleeves tops are a must.
1 shirt – chambray shirt to be used as a beach cover up or an extra layer for warmth
1 jacket – lightweight military style jacket to be used as an extra layer.
1 scarf – small scarf, can be worn around head or neck.. not quite big enough to double as a lavalava, but hubby should have plenty of those I can borrow!
3 necklaces – wooden beads, white beads and long gold chain with arrow detail
1 swim suit – black and white zig zig. It’s a one piece, but I’m not keen to reveal my midriff post baby #2 and this one is low cut enough at the front to not look to ‘nana-ish’
1 hat – or maybe two. Found a new fedora hat with a cute bow
and…….. 4 shoes, 3 t shirts, 1 back pack, 1 handbag.
I only once felt like I hadn’t packed enough and that was when we went night clubbing and I felt underdressed.. even in a dress!
Stay tuned for my next post.. a few snap shots of outfits I wore on holiday!
p.s I found the site Travel Fashion Girl to be really helpful with outfit planning.
